Even Better Wind Forecasts Thanks to Meteomatics
Meteomatics Sponsors the Swiss Sailing Team
The Swiss Sailing Team is receiving additional support in a crucial area. A sponsorship agreement with Meteomatics is opening new opportunities for Swiss national team sailors in weather and wind analysis, as well as corresponding forecasts.
For Marco Versari, Data and Technology Manager of the Swiss Sailing Team, this collaboration is a major step forward: “Meteomatics is known as a serious and highly competent partner. Their EURO1k model is unmatched in terms of precision and reliability—better than anything we’ve had before. And they have just launched a US1k model, which offers the highest resolution on the market and will help us prepare for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.”
Meteomatics AG, headquartered in St. Gallen, was founded in 2012 by Dr. Martin Fengler. The company specializes in high-resolution weather forecasting services, consulting, and historical weather data. Meteomatics combines data from various sources, including satellites, radar, and its proprietary weather drones (“Meteodrones”), to achieve highly accurate weather forecasts.
The company’s 90-meter downscaling method further refines the original 1-km resolution of the model to provide hyper-local precision. “Accurate and high-resolution wind data are crucial for the success of sailors. As a Swiss company, we are proud that the Swiss Sailing Team has chosen to partner with us, allowing us to support the athletes on their journey to the next Olympic Games,” says Dr. Alexander Stauch, Head of Marketing. Meteomatics AG’s customers include SBB, Axpo, ETH Zurich, and the offshore sailing community’s favorite app, Navily (the ‘TripAdvisor’ of the sea).
The collaboration with Meteomatics will help the Swiss Sailing Team provide specific templates and forecasts for each regatta. “The partnership is fantastic,” says Marco Versari. “We can automate various processes and offer highly customized support to our athletes. This will allow us to further develop the ‘Meteo and Tidal Project,’ which worked very well during the last Games in Marseille.”
